How to Evaluate a Real Estate Rental Listing Before Contacting the Owner

Rental scams are among the most damaging classifieds scams because they often ask for a deposit before you've even seen the property in person. A careful read of the listing itself can filter out most red flags before you ever make contact.

Warning signs in the listing itself

  • Rent significantly below the local market rate for the size, location, and condition described.
  • Photos that look like professional real estate stock images rather than photos of the actual property, or that appear in listings for other cities as well — a reverse image search can confirm this.
  • A landlord who claims to be abroad and unable to show the property in person, asking for a deposit to be sent before viewing.
  • Vague or missing address details that make it hard to verify the property actually exists at the location claimed.

Questions to ask before viewing

Ask for the exact address, confirm you can view the property in person (or via a live video call at minimum) before paying anything, and ask who will be present — ideally the owner or a licensed agent, not a stranger claiming to hold keys on their behalf.

Before you pay a deposit

Never wire a deposit or first month's rent before viewing the property and verifying the person you're dealing with actually has the right to rent it out. If a landlord is genuinely unable to meet, ask for a video walkthrough at minimum, and consider whether RahaKaitse escrow could structure the deposit so funds are only released once you've confirmed you have keys and access to a property matching what was advertised.
